Our Mission: Fundamental Chess strives for every student to develop a lifelong passion in which they can continually grow and appreciate as well as to empower each student to use critical thinking and concentration not only during games of chess but throughout their daily lives.

Derek Tan is a USCF National Master and the Director of Fundamental Chess. He has played chess competitively and professionally for about 13 years. Notable achievements include the 2006 and 2008 SoCal HS Co-Champion, 2007 American Open U2200 Winner and Runner-up to 2008 National K-12 Grade Championship. Seeking his next master title, he hopes to keep progressing his own passion for the game by helping students succeed at their own goals and by helping them ultimately develop a strong interest in something that can impact their lives.
