Fundamental Chess is a chess academy that offers beginner through advanced level private lessons and group classes.

My mission involves utilizing chess as a tool to enhance one’s cognitive abilities (mental calculation, focus, strategy-making, etc.), to develop patience and good sportsmanship, and most importantly to have fun while fostering a potentially lifelong pastime.

US Chess Federation National Master Derek Tan is the head instructor and founder of Fundamental Chess. He has been teaching chess for over 8 years and has coached numerous students into the USCF Top 100 for their respective age groups. As a player, he was the 2006 and 2008 CA High School State Champion and formerly served as the President and Captain of the UCLA Chess Team. Current and former students have reached the USCF Top 100 list for their respective age groups and have successfully competed at state and national level tournaments.

Please feel free to contact me for more information on rates, scheduling private chess lessons, or registering for chess classes.

“The game of Chess is not just an idle amusement. There are several valuable qualities of the mind, useful in every aspect of life, that can be acquired or strengthened by it, which can become habits ready to be used in any occasion. For life is a kind of chess game where we often have points to gain, competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there are various good and bad events, that are to some degree, due to good judgment or the lack of it.”

- Benjamin Franklin
