May’s Chess Tournament Highlights:

5/22 Friday Knights #21 (Rating Report)

Twelve players competed in Friday Knights #21 held on May 22nd. There were three sections: Open, U1000, and U500. Derrick Peng took clear first in the Open section with a perfect score of 3/3, also setting a personal USCF rating high of 1374. Ian Sun won the U1000 section and achieved an 800+ rating. In the U500 section, Liam Patel and Kennan Liu tied for first with 2.5/3 and both took home their first Friday Knights Championship trophies. The next Friday Knights will take place on June 12th – Register in advance.

5/23 Memorial Day Classic Scholastics (Rating Report)

Fundamental Chess Academy sent six players to the 2015 Memorial Day Classic Tournament held in Ontario, CA. Our scholastic team consisted of Derrick Peng, Colin Yang, Alex Chen, Kennan Liu and Alex Cartee. In the Open section, Derrick Peng won 4th place. In the U1000 section featuring 38 scholastic players, five year old Alex Cartee won the Top Unrated Trophy.

Playing in the 3-day main tournament of the Memorial Day Classic, Kaitlyn Chu took clear 1st place in the U1800 section with 5/6 – 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 half-point bye; Kaitlyn competed at a swim meet in the morning and was forced to miss Round 1. She also set a personal rating high of USCF 1795 and continues her recent streak of strong tournament performances which includes: leading our FCA team to 1st place at the 2015 USATW Team Tournament, 2nd place in the U1500 at the 2014 North American Open in Las Vegas while also winning the Mixed Doubles with Gabriel Sam, and a tie for 2nd place in the U1400 at the 2014 American Open held locally in Orange County. In the past year, Kaitlyn has gained 670 rating points and recently entered into the USCF National Top 100 for U16 Girls! She will be competing in the 2015 ChessKid.com National Online Invitational Championships this Friday through Sunday at Fundamental Chess Academy. You can watch all her games live this weekend on Chess.com (Round 1: 6/5 Friday at 4pm, Round 2: 6/6 Saturday 8am, Round 3: Saturday 2pm, Round 4: 6/7 Sunday 8am, Round 5: Sunday 2pm).

5/31 Chess Match vs. Oak View (Rating Report)

On Sunday May 31st, FCA hosted its second chess match versus Oak View Chess Club of Huntington Beach with a turnout of 22 participants. The top section featured a 3-player team format with the top three students representing each club in a round robin.

Fundamental Chess Academy won this event’s match 8-1 with Marcus Peng and Derrick Peng leading the way both with perfect scores of 3/3. Our Board #3 Ethan Wu won 3rd place with a score of 2/3.

The rest of the 16 participants competed in the Booster section, a 3-round Swiss-style format. In the U600 section, Hursh Singh and Colin Yang tied for 1st with perfect scores, while Alex Chen took 3rd. Will Crocker won the U300/Unrated section, while Kennan Liu and Lina Tran won 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

FCA Summer Session

As summer approaches and the school year coming to a close, Fundamental Chess Academy will be kicking off its “Summer Session” this June hosting week-long chess camps at University Community Park in Irvine starting June 22 through August 21st (Chess Camp Registration). Chess classes and Friday Knights will continue to be held at their normally scheduled times for the summer, check the Calendar for details. Summer break is one of the best times for students to accelerate their chess improvement while also keeping their minds active while school’s out!
